Have you ever heard of a Google Sitemap? Similar to the sitemap on websites that tell visitors what pages are on your site, a Google Sitemap simply tell search engines exactly what is on your site.

1. Google Sitemap Explained?

The Sitemaps allows a webmaster to tell search engines when a url is available for searching. A Sitemap is usually an XML file and allows a webmaster to give more information than normal about a particular URL: recent updates, how often the content is changed and how often they would like Google to visit their site. This makes it easier for search engines to determine what the website is about from the webmasters point of view.

2. Step-by-Step Help on Creating a Sitemap: 

• Be sure to not include pages that you do not want indexed by Google. eg. images, flash files and pages that have no relevance to what it is you are trying to push on your website.
• Make sure that only one entry is listed for the home page. ie www.yoursite.com and www.yoursite.com/index.html are the same so rather take out the one that says /index.html .
• Upload your new sitemap to the root directory of your site and name it sitemap.xml.

Alternativly, you will need to have a Google Webmasters Account to upload a sitemap.

First you will need to create a new Google Account, after doing this you need to go to https://www.google.com/webmasters/sitemaps/ . First you will need to add your website to the webmaster tools and then you will need to verify that you are indeed the owner of the site. Once this is done you can then use the sitemap link and follow the easy steps to add the sitemap.

4. Now What

Now you wait until Google has crawled your sitemap. Getting all your links crawled by Google if it is a large website can be tricky. Do not be discouraged, this is a hard step even for the experienced. There are bound to be error that you come across but eventually you will get it right as Google is very specific about guiding you on the right path.
